Job Summary
- The Market Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for overseeing clinical strategy, nursing operations, and performance standards across multiple hospitals within an assigned market
- This executive leader ensures alignment with organizational goals, regulatory compliance, and the delivery of high-quality, safe, and patient-centered care
- The Market CNO collaborates with hospital leadership to implement evidence-based practices, advance nursing excellence, and promote systemwide clinical integration
Essential Functions
- Provides strategic direction and oversight for nursing practice and clinical operations across the market
- Leads implementation of standardized nursing protocols, quality goals, and evidence-based practices
- Collaborates with executive and clinical leadership to support the National Quality Program and journey toward becoming a Highly Reliable Organization (HRO)
- Supports workforce planning, staffing benchmarks, and budget development for nursing departments
- Develops annual education and competency strategies in partnership with site-level leaders
- Monitors and responds to clinical performance metrics, intervening in sites with sustained variance
- Ensures hospitals maintain clear nursing administrative structures and appropriate scopes of authority
- Serves as a mentor and advisor to local CCOs and Directors of Nursing and Clinical Services (DNCS)
- Supports succession planning and leadership development for nursing teams across the market
- Conducts clinical assessments, reviews regulatory readiness, and drives corrective action plans
- Translates clinical demands into operational solutions that enhance outcomes and efficiency
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Strong clinical knowledge with demonstrated leadership in strategic operations
- Ability to influence and lead across diverse teams and facilities
- Deep understanding of regulatory, safety, and performance metrics
- Proficient in data interpretation, EMR systems, and clinical analytics
- Excellent communication, mentorship, and interpersonal skills
- Travel within the assigned market (approximately 10% of time)
- Must have good and regular attendance and uphold organizational values in all interactions
Qualifications Education
- Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN), Healthcare Administration (MHA), Business Administration (MBA), or Public Health (MPH) required
Licenses/Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice required
Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years as a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) or Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) with progressive leadership responsibility required
- Experience in multi-site leadership or in a large facility setting
- Proven track record in clinical program development, performance improvement, and regulatory compliance
- Prior experience in a for-profit healthcare system and with CMS Star Ratings and Leapfrog metrics preferred
