The Research Systems Analyst is responsible for all data communications from the Hospital Information Department to the Research Department.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum education and experience: At least five years' working experience with computers, communications and/or related equipment, a bachelor's degree in a related field or a sufficient combination of education and experience.
Knowledge/Skills: Incumbent will have experience repairing, upgrading, diagnosing computer hardware and software, and also have experience working with multiple operating system platforms in a research environment. Windows 3.1, 95 and NT, and Macintosh systems required. Unix and Novell preferred.
PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Research Systems Analyst is responsible for all data communications from the Hospital Information Department to the Research Department. Individuals supervise system operations and is responsible for the workflow to all Research departments utilizing a Local Area Network. Maintains accurate records for computer utilization and schedules sequence of applications to meet deadlines and best utilize available time. Individuals provide technical advice on equipment evaluation and selection.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Supervise the operations of all computer equipment, communication devices, and peripheral equipment of the Research Department. Develops and maintains all necessary procedures related to computer operations and maintenance. Responsible for backup of all files, applications and systems software. Responsible for safeguarding and storage of all backups.
2. Interacts with Principal Investigators regarding production software systems and computer equipment. Resolves equipment failures/problems with research computer equipment. Assists with resolution of personal computer related problems.
3. Provides technical advice on equipment evaluation, selection and installation. Consults on communications requirements in such areas as local area networking, intranet/internet networking, distributed processing and voice/data/imaging integration.
SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS
4. Insures training of operations staff and new employees including continuing education for current staff. Establishes standards and verifies proficiency of employees.
5. Assists in planning and controlling capital budget expenditures for information systems equipment.
6. Works with the Telecommunications department to properly define, recommend and ensure compliance of standards for data communications. Maintains inventory of all Research data lines.
7. Reviews new applications, grants, programs, and projects their effect on equipment operation. Authorizes acceptance of new programs for production.
BEHAVIORAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
8. Able to meet details of daily schedule. Must stay current in the latest generation hardware and cope with problems resulting from multiple shifts.
9. Sufficient oral and written communications ability to train staff. Has excellent interpersonal skills in order to deal with department managers, principal investigators and administrative personnel.
10. Able to promote a constructive and positive atmosphere within the work area by demonstrating the ability to cooperate and assist physician investigators and other staff.
11. Able to be an effective problem solver through active problem identification and other collaboration with physician investigators, committee chairs, and other staff. Uphold a courteous, professional manner with a high level of confidentiality.
12. Able to remain flexible with work schedules and be to be a team player. Must possess proficient organizational skills; able to establish priorities for work; possess a commitment to meeting deadlines.
13. Able to resolve conflicts in a proactive manner that demonstrates a high level of customer service.
14. Able to serve as a role model to other staff around customer service.
